UNIVERSITY OF BUEA STUDENTS ON STRIKE AGAIN

Monday March, 29 2010, marks the beginning of another strike action perpetuated by students of the University of Buea Students’ Union (UBSU). UBSU whose activities were suspended by the Vice Chancellor for gross irregularities in the running and management of the affairs of the Union which resulted to its suspension during the yearly celebration of the University of Buea black day in which out gone president Paul Shipu never supported the idea of the celebration calling it a provocation to the parents of the deceased students.
For what prompted the students to embark on strike action beginning today, they distributed handbills in which this reporter laid hands on one. The reasons are as follows:
- we must run UBSU election according to our constitution
- students who failed FRE & ENG 101 should be allowed to register FRE & ENG 102
- the buying of forms to collect FRE & ENG results should be abolished
- the attempts to increase fees to 100.000frs should be dropped
- the fact that re-sit exams will no longer be written, we want all courses for re-sit
- the purchase of sport handout as a pre-requisite to sit for sport exams or test
- lack of social facilities on campus – water, electricity, non functioning of toilets, insufficient food at restau
- non production of ID cards
- Delay in Production of students’ transcripts - we want this process decentralized
- Indiscriminate suspension of students seen with switched off mobile phones in exams. Extra credit be granted at all levels
- More research allowances to post graduate students
VC’s attempt to dissolve UBSU in order to attain the above objectives. We hereby declare a DEAD CAMPUS until our demands are met.
Those are the aforementioned reasons why the student union is going on a strike action. But the question since the activities of UBSU has been suspended indefinitely, who are those orchestrating the strike action in which classes has been disrupted?

It is a pretty that students in a big university like bea are always treated like kids,with the administratives official having too much power.Give to the student demand because it is their right voice out what is not right,when it comes to their acedemics.Let the vice chancellor watch out.

really these students are studying under dictatorship and i cant emagin that in this 21st century a big institute like that can lack the above facilities. What were there doing? they ought to had strike earlier.

UBSU IS THE FIRST LINE TERROR IN THIS CASE. CAN UBSU LET GO THE INNOCENT? I KNOW WHEN THE LEADERS ARE HUNGARY THEY GO ASKING FOR A BRIDE WITH THE SHADDING OF INNOCENT BLOOD
THE BIBLE SAYS; MY PEOPLE PERISH FOR LACK OF KNOWLEGDE. WHAT IS IT TO YOU?
WHAT THE VC SHOULD KNOW IS THAT LEADERSHIP OF TERRORISM AND DICTATORSHIP IS LIKE BUYING WEAPONS FOR BLOOD SHADE.
TO BE WARNED EARLIER ANY INNOCENT LIFE SLADE MUST BE ACCOUNTED FOR BY UBSU AND VC.
UBSU YOU CAN NOT WIN A BATTLE BY CUTTING OFF YOUR HAND; I KNOW WHAT IS CALLED A STRIKE IN UB.
TAKE CARE BELOVED.

in every democracy there is a little dictatorship and in every dictatorship there is democracy.pple should fight for their rights provided they did not give away their rights in the first place.some of the reasons for the strike action are valid, but note that UB is a state-owned Versity and not privately-owned in which suchs needs can be quickly satisfied.UB is controlled by the Gov’t and it will always remain what it is, except the gov’t changes(that is another story), then things might change but as of now i see no need for the strike action.it might instead lead to more suffering.infact the whole sys is messed and mixed-up, going in for a strike is like dressing a pig with gold....

UB students always have excuses for silly strifes.Whatz the use of black day?Tis simply an umbrella for occultic practices.As for the resit and 100000frs fee,i believe prayers can change many things.Even if a strike can change something,i choose never to be part of one,and get shot and have my name celebrated as a “fallen hero”.I ADVISE UB STUDENTS TO FOCUS ON GOD AND PRAY HARDER.

Why has Buea suddenly been a crime ridden neighbourhood?

What is the actuall problem? why will students choose strike as a means to solve problems that could be resolve by mere reasonning?

I NEED SOMEONE TO TALK TO THESE STUDENTS TO FIND OUT THE ANSWERS TO THESES QUESTIONS.

........ hereby declare a DEAD CAMPUS until our demands are met!.......
WHICH DEMANDS?
THE ONLY VALUABLE THING IN THAT LIST IS REALLY THE FEES BEING INCREASED TO 100,FRSCFA, WHICH SHOULD NOT HAPPEN FOR THE SAKE OF OUR POOR PARENTS!
THE FACT THAT FRE101 AND ENG101 ARE PRE-REQS FOR FRE102 AND ENG102, MAKES STUDENTS WORK HARDER THAN THEY WOULD HAVE IF IT WAS NOT THE CASE. AND EVERYWHERE IN AFRICA LIKE IN THE WORLD, YOU WOULD FIND A LOT OF UNIVERSITY COURSES THAT ARE PRE-REQS FOR OTHERS. IT IS THE LOGICAL WAY OF MOVING ON… THERE IS NO USE TRYING TO CONJUGATE IN THE PAST PARTICIPLE OR FUTURE TENSE WHEN YOU HAVE NOT YET LEARNED AND MASTERED THE SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE! AS FOR RE-SIT COURSES, EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD, RE-SIT NEVER INVOLVES ALL THE UNIVERSITY COURSES, BUT PARTICULAR COURSES FOR PARTICULAR LEVELS, BASED ON LECTURER’S AVAILABILITY AND LOTS OF OTHER CONSIDERATIONS...TRUST ME IF ONE COULD RE-SIT ALL HIS OR HER COURSES, THERE WILL BE MORE STUDENTS MAKING THEIR COURSES AT THE RE-SIT THAN AT REGULAR SESSIONS AND UNTIL YOU PUT YOURSELF IN THE SEAT OF A LECTURER, YOU WOULD NOT FEEL THE PINCH OF THE ADDED WORK ON YOUR SCHEDULE. FROM MY EXPERIENCE IN UB, A LOT OF STUDENTS FAILED COURSES NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT BRIGHT ENOUGH TO MAKE IT, BUT BECAUSE THEY WERE TOO LAZY FORGO A PART OF THEIR SOCIAL LIFE AND DEDICATE A BIT TO DOING WHAT PRIMARILY BROUGHT THEM TO BUEA; SCHOOL! IF WE STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE, LETS GO FOR EXCELLENCE AND BE PROUD OF OUR EXCELLENCE, BECAUSE; EXCELLENCE IS THE CURE TO MEDIOCRITY!
A WISE PERSON ONCE SAID;
” IF YOU THINK EDUCATION IS EXPENSIVE; TRY IGNORANCE”
UNTIL SOME STUDENTS VISIT AND SCHOOL IN THE UNIVERSITIES OF DOUALA, YAOUNDE I, YAOUNDE II, NGOUNDERE AND DSCHANG, YOU WILL NEVER REALIZE UB IS REALLY A PLACE TO BE COMPARED TO THE OTHERS. MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WILL CHOOSE UB A THOUSAND TIMES OVER UNIYAO I (NGOA-EKELE).
PLEASE IT IS TIME TO LEAVE THIS UBSU ISSUE AND THE FEW WHO ARE TRYING TO FUEL JUST THE WRONG FLAMES AT THE DETRIMENT OF THE MULTITUDE AND CONCENTRATE ON STUDIES AND FORGING AHEAD. I WAS ONE OF THOSE WHO FOUGHT FOR UBSU, BUT NOT THE UBSU THAT WILL CHALLENGE OUR OWN GOVERNMENT IN TERMS OF CORRUPTION AND WAYWARDNESS. I AM SURE WHEN THE RIGHT PEOPLE WILL HOLD THE REALMS OF UBSU, THERE WILL BE A PERFECT OR NEAR TO PERFECT DIALOG AND THE SO CALLED BAN WILL AUTOMATICALLY UPLIFT ITSELF.
LET US NOT BE OUR OWN STUMBLING BLOCKS!!!!!!
A WORD TO A WISE IS SUFFICIENT AND I DARE SAY A SPEECH TO WISE PEOPLE IS MORE THAN ENOUGH!!!!
I REST MY CASE.

Dear students,
Please avoid the Nigerian system of studies in Cameroon,the more strikes come up the more the semester is extended.
More to that,the student leaders and the school administrators are both ignorant of the text governing their activites.It is enough reson why there will always be differences on campus.

I do not see any problem in the fee issue. If there is a commensurate improvement in the way teaching is dispense, then this will fortify the quality of student that will good through UB. This will make our certificates more competitive at the international scene

I have always asked myself these questions about UBSU as quasi-keen observe
Is UBSU a ‘Friend’ or a ‘Foe’?
Is the existence of UB a de facto exercise base on the tradition of other
universities?
What has been the legacy of UBSU since her creation?
Was UBSU created out of mediocrity to benefit a few or was it based on
student-altruism for a better UB?

I think that UB has always made it clear that UBSU is part of the
administration that has the privilege to represent the petition of
students. I personally think that this has always not been done in a
civilised manner. I wonder if UBSU has a plan of action concretely
taillored and easily realisable within the context of UB and not just like
other student union groups. Again I wonder if UBSU has priorities.
I suggest UBSU should sample student opinion to find out exactly what they
think. I would not dare to comment on a possible outcome and will wish to
leave that to the philosopher of our time.

I do not think that any suggestion from UBSU that will be presented to the
VC will be dismissed if it is feasible, workable and healthy for UB. Those
guys are the top will earned credits for making UB a better place which to
me has always stood the test of time and has remained ‘da corner to B’.
I think UBSU should re-think, re-design and obtain a new beginning which
is healthy for UB and for the Cameroonian community

My dear folks.  Enough is enough with this UBSU and its intentions for strike.  Is the meaning of UBSU strike.  I hear there are only about 20 students involved.  Why will 20 students disrupt the activities of over 14,000 students.  I even hear some of them have a GPA of less thatn 1 after spending 10 semesters in B.  Jesus! one should not take you guys serious.  UBSU is noted for faking allegations against the university just to insight strike.  and University administrators are behind manipulating them.  I beg you folks, those professors are alrady at the end of their careers.  You are only beginning yours.  You better watch out.  Afterall, what has happened to the Wanobis? the Angwenas, the Abias, the Bara Mark, the Nguves?  These professors are only using you for selfish interest.  I hear Bara Marc is hiding in a Catholic school in Buea as teacher.  God forbid!

Anyway, I hear they went to beg the administration of UB that they were sorry.  You better!  But I also hear they want to plan another after university games.  Mr. Vice-Chancellor, are you aware of this?

I rest my case

Of course the vice chancellor is aware/ He is just gathering momentum. By the way Mr Maron, how come all your stories are only ‘‘I hear say’’? lol

my dear there is no need to rest case in this matter we need to forward the case; if UBSU do not mind can they post their plan of actions on this side so that we can all see? My dear brothers and sisters if they do post their plans here you will not rest this case; their plan of actions bears the following fruits;
-Increase expenses for students
-Disturb all organisations on campus regarding studies and promote all party oriented organisations.
-currupt the minds of innocent students.
-Disturb accadermic progress with strikes
The birth of UBSU was a good Idea but this child is going the wrong way and should be REDIRECTED OR EXILED.
THOSE WHOSE CAREER HAS BEEN RUINED BY THEIR MISDIDS AND MISUNDERSTANDING OF WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT SHOULD NOT DESTROY THE CAREER OF OTHERS.
My beloved bros and sis strike is the best way to achieve failure in life.
I sayb this with evidence cos i have been in UB and actively participated in a strike and the only achievement was lost of two lifes and uncountable injuries;
NOTE THAT CORRUPTION EXTENDV TO STRIKES AS WELL. INTEAD OF FIGHTING CORRUPTION THE DEFINATION OF UBSU STRIKE IS;SEEKING FOR A SELFISH AMBITION TO BE CORRUPTED BY SOMEONE (ADMINISTRATION).THIS IS THE USUAL END OF ALL STRIKES.“MY STOMACH IS FOR FOOD STORAGE ONLY”; PEOPLE PERISH FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE.

I REST MY OWN CASE

hey guys UB a place to be has become a placeot to be.This ubsu was created for the students and not for a few individuals but their main aim is ‘strike’.Ub is a state university and any decision taken is taken by the gov’t th vc has no say. look at what happened ti lambi.the decision taken as far as fre101 is concern is just a means to let the students work hard and encourage the anglophones to learn.TO TELL U THE TRUTH I WAS THERE BUT FRE101 WAS NOT A PROB BUT HERE IN YDE FRENCH IS A STOMBLING BLOCK.AS FAR AS THE FEES ARE CONCERN 100000 THOUSAND IS A SMALL PRICE TO PAY. THIS WILL ONLY MAKE OUR UNIVERSITY A COMPETITIVE ONE AND OUR DEGREE A RECONISABLE IN THE INTERNATION SCENE.SO ALL U WHO ARE THERE TELL THE UBSU LEADERS WITH THEIR UNDESIRABLE GPA’s TO LEAVE THE INNOCENT ONES WHO HAVE COME TO STUDY FIGHT FOR THEIR FUTURE IF THEY DON’T HAVE ON.

Don’t call Lambi in here, abeg, that one na different story. na different tin.
I don’t think adding fees to 100,000 will improve anything. it is not even necessary. it should even be made free. On the contrary, increasing fees shows the inability of the gov’t to educate it’s citizens.
The reason why there are no school fees in government primary schools should be the same reason for cancelling university fees (maskedly term registration). This has got nothing to do with international competition. It is not school fees that tell you it’s a big university. It is not high ticket/gate fees that will guarantee you a good match, neither the title/poster/cover of a novel/movie.... that will guarantee it’s good.
Then why do those scandinavian schools have no tuition fees...? i may keep on repeating myself

It is rather unfortunate that some people think that striking will achieve something. At best they will get well beaten, and at worst they will get shot at. Nothing will really change. I am against this whole idea of continuous and repeated strikes.

UB students should know that life is a battle and every one should strive for the best with wisdom and pragmatic reality. Lets face facts, no signify change will occur after this strike. To achieve that you need to change the system at large. Bad management in Cameroon is every where, UB inclusive. And that is not about to change now. While I respect their right to express their frustrations, I think that this is not a wise decision..

Camerounais Comptriot,
Depuis 1982, nous avons tous entendu parler de ces slogans politiques
* Décentralisation
*ECONOMIE CRISE
* LE BON GOUVERNEMENT
* PRIVATISATION
* GRANDES AMBITIONS
* AMBASSADEUR DE BONNE VOLONTE
