ANGLOPHONES CHEATED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BUEA (UB) On the 11th of February 1961, Southern Cameroonians voted massively to join La Republique du Cameroun and by this very act, Southern Cameroon became part and parcel of what is known today as the republic of Cameroon. When our fore fathers decided to make this choice, I want to believe they did so in good faith and they did not foresee what Anglophones are going through in this present Cameroon. But as some of the students said during the last UB strike East Cameroon cheated our parents, we the children refused to be cheated. Anglophones have been and are continually being marginalized. As a student in UB, I would not bother recounting what others have written about the marginalisation of Anglophones but would cite a recent case in UB that most people out there together with our students fail to understand. In the Republic of Cameroon, we have six state universities, five of which are of Francophone origin and only one is of Anglo-Saxon tradition. What is making me mad is the case of the admission requirement into UB. Our English brothers who were in the university of Yaounde in the 1990s demanded for a university and so university of Buea was created and still English speaking Cameroonians are being cheated in regard to admission into UB, The Place To Be. In his decree No. 93/034 of January 19, 1993 to organize the university of Buea sign by Paul Biya President of the Republic, chapter eight Article 78 states The admission requirements set out below are minimum requirements which may entitle an applicant to a place in the university for first degree courses: Section A states; the general certificate of Education Ordinary Level with passes in five approved subjects including English language prior to sitting the general certificate of Education Advance Level That same chapter Article 79 Section D states Students whose first language of instruction is not English must pass a prescribed English language test. Now I would want to look at this articles in two fold, that those who drew this article did it in bad faith to marginalized English speaking Cameroonians (Anglophones) entering into UB and give a lee way for francophones entering into UB. Presently in UB, we have what we called intensive English language classes for six weeks which is open only to francophones upon payment of 175,000frs and students who would pass this intensive English language course would gain admission directly into UB while those who failed would be allowed to write another test in September called English language proficiency test again open only to francophones while our Anglophone brothers who failed English language at Ordinary level are refused admission into UB and they are not given any chance again, it should be noted that Anglophones take this as a ploy by the regime and the French government to reduce the entry of students of English origin into UB. It is hard to believe that some one who have studied for 14 years in English and because he/she failed ordinary level English are refused admission into UB whether such individual has the number of points required or not. While our French speaking brothers who throughout their life have been studying in French and because they did the so-called Intensive English language course for just six weeks are admitted into UB. The population of francophones in UB is growing and this is not a good sign, in the long run Anglophones would be the one to suffer because job opportunities would be grasped by our French speaking brothers while our English speaking brothers spent numerous years in Yaounde and Douala universities for no good reason without graduating just because they did not gain admission into UB. It is worthy to not that a student in UB was recently caught threatening to kill one English lecturer if he fails English 101 (a compulsory course in UB), to our greatest surprise that student came from the francophone region of the country; WHAT A SHAME ! ! ! I would not stop without giving proposals and alternatives on the way forward without being bias because Anglophones and Francophones are one. Yes UB is an Anglo-Saxon university and is open to all Cameroonians and the essence of knowing English is to be able to communicate in the university since it is the language of instruction. The authorities concerned can still do something for it is not too late, this is what I propose: THAT ADMISSION INTO UB SHOULD HAVE AS IT MINIMUM REQUIREMENT A PASS IN ORDINARY LEVEL ENGLISH OR A PASS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST ORGANISE BY THE UNIVERSITY FOR ALL, BOTH ANGLOPHONES AND FRANCOPHONES SO AS TO GIVE CHANCE TO EACH AND EVERY CAMEROONIAN WHETHER FROM WHICH BACKGROUND. This would make Anglophones who cannot study in other universities to study in UB and make us all feel at home. I do hope the eyes and senses of our prestigious University of Buea Students Union (UBSU) and the authorities of UB are wide open. For a stitch in time saves nine. Good Luck By Mr. Bara Mark Student, UB Microbiology Department
i agree with you mark, its really sad that this is happening,i think something shd be done n fast
Hi Ben, all what you wrote is shit, I have jsut one question to ask you, do anglophones write any french test before being admitted in the other universities of la republic, or do they write their exams in french, there is something I will want all of you out there to know, if you want to study at UB, then you should pass the ‘O’ level engish, if you don’t keep on witing until you pass the ‘O’ level english, how many percent does the francophones students have at UB, what I want you out there to know is that be it french Cameroon or English Cameroon as you are putting it, we are all Cameroonians, and if you think, you are not a Cameroonian, please then go to the Cameroon you think you belong to, what I will like you to know is that life is a battle, as far back to the age of enlightenment, the pholosophers enlightened us, and one of them said, man was burn free but everywhere he is in Chains, so that is how life is, all Cameroonians are one, If you can not pass the ‘O’level english, please write the TOEFL or IELTS test if you think the G.C.E ‘O’ level english is difficult to pass. Think twice brother before complaining.

HI, BEN, ANGLOPHONES PEOPLE SHOUD STOP COMPLAINING AND WORK HARD. ARE YOU THE ONLY ONE THAT ARE MARGINALIZED. I AM A BAMILEKE GIRL AND WE BAMILEKE ARE ALSO MARGINALIZED BUT WE DON’T RELY ON THAT. YOU HAVE TO MAKE GOOD USE OF YOUR TWO HANDS . I WAS IN UB FOR 3 YEARS AND ANGLOPHONES ARE THE GREATEST CHEATERS IN SCHOOL.SO STOP COMPLAINING AND WORK HARD , DON’T RELY ON HISTORY EVERYTIME, THAT IS THE PAST. BE PRESENT AND LIVE PRESENTLY. THANKS.
Hi all, like many other here. I think our anglophones brothers are complaining too much about their marginalization by the so called francophone people. What could not an anglophone write an article about the marginalization or discrimination of pygmees tribes in cameroon? The real problem is not discrimination, even if all universities of cameroon are english speaking, the same people will complain, saying other people from West, North are invaded them.
Many tribes and people from both sides (anglophones and francophones) feel marginalized or discrimanited, so brothers francophones are not plotting against anglophones, but it is a lack a good governance from people that are supposed to govern the country.
English or French are only colonial languages, our true languages and cultures are our africans cultures and languages.
We are not French or English like the autor of this article seem to say, but Cameroonians and Africans at all.
English and French are only languages we use to communicate with other people of the world (other africans, asians and europeens)...
What do u guys know about marginalisation of anglophone, please i think you all should read the geo politics of our country before making any statement here, who cares abt the pigmies, who has stop them from complaining.we are talking here of a country which voluntary decided to join another country inwhich they were so suppose to operate on an equal basis. Please I enjoin you all to go read abt ur history very well.
i think the speaker above by name binladen is just pointless when writing to romeo can u came out clear with what u are trying to oppose from him cuz me i support him 100%
