WHAT CAUSED THE STRIKE? The University of Buea, Monday 10th witnessed a strike action by the lecturers. The strike which came as a result of poor working conditions, low salaries, lack of offices and many other reasons highlighted by the lecturers.
In a chat with one of them he outlined some grievances they are going through whereas the government seem to give deaf ears to their pleads. It should be noted that the grievances of all the lecturers was sent to the Minister for Higher Education in Yaoundé through a letter dully signed by some members of the Association of Higher Education Teachers in Cameroon on October 3rd 2008.
All their worries were properly outlined in the above mentioned letter for appropriate measures to be put in place. Commenting on the content of the letter, they expressed support for the move, affirming that they were in support of improved working conditions such as housing and car loans, a good salary, the provision of offices for lecturers and not the current situation of many of them in one office, amongst other things. But the case with the University of Buea is different as it may seemed that the lecturers only want an increase in salary and better working conditions because there is a newly constructed building to accommodate the lecturers in the University of Buea. Though the building is yet to be officially opened the office space is said to be in tact.
We hope that the big wigs or authorities concern take proper actions to see into the most pressing of the problems raised by the lecturers so that classes can commenced come Monday November 17. |
